World Food Day October 16th

World Food Day October 16th

Thanet is celebrating World Food Day on Sunday, 16th October at Margate's Winter Gardens.  The doors will be open from 11am - 4pm with this year's theme highlighting Fairtrade cotton.

With over 100 stalls featuring Fairtrade and local produce plus a fashion show, musical entertainment and workshops (including drumming, story-telling and cooking demos), this is a great family day out and it's free!

Broadstairs Food Festival 30th September - 2nd October

Broadstairs Food Festival 30th September - 2nd October

Broadstairs 3 day Food Festival gets underway tomorrow and this year, not only will there be more than 100 stalls celebrating Kent's finest food and drink but there will be sunshine too and lots of it!  Last year more than 21,000 people attended this lovely festival on Victoria Gardens and I suspect this year will be even busier.

Ramsgate's Summer Squall Arts Festival

Ramsgate's Summer Squall Arts Festival

Ramsgate Art Group are all set for another festival following on from the success of last year's August Bank Holiday event.

The weekend programme is packed with art including painting, sculpture, photography, music, poetry, street theatre and ofcourse the chance to meet many of our talented local artists, see their studios and buy their work.

Golf Open Week

Golf Open Week
Golf Open Week

What a fantastic week the Golf Open was, not just for Sandwich but for Ramsgate and the surrounding areas too.

The weather was unseasonably awful but it didn't put golf fans off and our guests like many others braved the wind and rain to watch their favourite golfers play the infuriating game of golf (I am rubbish at it).  Thank you to the BBC radio and TV coverage (now you don't hear that very often!) as they kept talking about the White Cliffs of Ramsgate and marvelling at the surrounding areas and even with the stormy weather it still managed to look beautiful.

Broadstairs Dickens Festival

Tomorrow marks the start of Broadstairs Dickens Festival with 7 days of Victorian fun including the Victorian Country Fair which is open every day of the festival from 10am - 5 pm. Broadstairs truly know how to enjoy a Dickens filled week - they should do by now as they have been holding such festivities every year since 1937 (apart from during WWII).

Great Wall of Ramsgate Update

Great Wall of Ramsgate Update

Mike Samson (one of our featured artists) sent me this amazing YouTube clip below showing off Ramsgate's newest installments to the Great Wall down at Ramsgate's Main Sands.

The official unveilling of 'GWR' was a couple of weeks ago and most of the remaining spaces on the now famous hoardings have been taken up with more suberb artwork by local artists.

Good Luck to Margate and Turner Contemporary

Good Luck to Margate and Turner Contemporary

Congratulations to Margate after a fantastic week following the opening of Turner Contemporary on 16th April.

I popped over last Thursday on a sunny afternoon and Margate's old town was bustling.  As I walked towards Margate's Turner Contemporary, there was a real summer atmosphere with small independent stores full of customers and people enjoying food and drink sitting outside pubs and cafes.  Margate is on the up and long may it continue!

Unexpected Birthday Surprise

Unexpected Birthday Surprise

My parents came up to Ramsgate this week to celebrate my thirty eleventh birthday.  We sat out at the beautiful harbour and enjoyed the sunshine although, by the evening, I realised I had enjoyed it a little too much and had sunburn for my birthday!

The Matthew is back in town

The Matthew is back in town

The amazing Matthew is sailing into Ramsgate Harbour tomorrow on 23rd March according to their 'latest news' page on their website - it's a pretty spectacular sight moored at The Harbour.  We popped down to take a look on deck last friday before it sailed up The Thames for the weekend.  The boat is in 'fancy dress' at the moment as a dragon, to promote the latest Narnia film, Voyage of The Dawn Treader which has just come out on DVD.

Fairtrade is now a Billion Pound Industry

Fairtrade is now a Billion Pound Industry

Britain is the world's largest customer when it comes to Fairtrade and figures released on monday 28th February show that the UK spent over £1.1billion last year on Fairtrade products - up from £836 million the previous year.  These figures are great news for the growing number of Fairtrade farmers and workers who depend on this initiative to help ensure a better future for themsleves and their families.
